About the Artist

Art has always been a part of my life.  I started creating art when I was a small child.  From that time on I was always drawing or painting.  I took several art classes in high school, but it wasn’t until my senior year that I knew I wanted to do art for a living.  My art teacher nurtured the talent she saw in me and encouraged me take it further.  Although I took a few college art courses, I am mainly a self-taught artist.  My experiences were and still are my best teachers.

I am confident with pencil, color pencil and pastels, however oil paint is my medium of choice. I am drawn to the rich colors and the buttery quality.  Using smooth, top quality canvas or gesso hardboard gives me a surface with just enough texture to achieve the fine details I desire.  I strive for the realism that the details allow me to achieve.

I take the ordinary and make it extraordinary in my paintings.  I choose subjects that have everyday beauty, and through realism I try to bring out that beauty.  I like to evoke emotions, especially bringing back the good feelings of childhood memories.  My current series features pages from children’s picture books paired with an object that goes along with the story.  Another emotion that I like to bring about with my paintings is amusement.  I often take ideas, such as “Ball and  Jacks”, that bring a certain image to mind.   Then I create it in a different way by painting a baseball sitting a top of jack playing cards.  I twist the words to make a painting with a different meaning than what is first brought to mind.  If I can bring a smile to the viewers face my objective has been met.
